Unlike old telephone connections or coaxial television cable boxes that might already be plugged into your walls, fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) requires a dedicated technical technician visit to run a physical optical line straight into your residence.
Knowing the logistical parameters of this visit ensures your lawn remains un-mowed during trench runs and prevents structural disputes regarding placement and hole drilling.
Step-by-Step Installation Day Process
The technician runs a thin weather-proof optical fiber strand from the street's distribution box (located either on an overhead wooden utility pole or inside a green underground pedestal cabinet) to a small gray plastic box (a network interface device) mounted on the outside wall of your home.
A small pencil-diameter hole must be drilled through your exterior wall near an available indoor electrical outlet. The technician routes the fiber wire inside, seals the entry point thoroughly with silicone weather-proofing, and mounts an indoor fiber jack plate.
The indoor fiber wire connects directly into the Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The ONT is the modem equivalent for light signals. It requires constant electrical power and translates incoming laser signals from glass fibers into standard electrical packets.
An Ethernet cable is run from the ONT's high-speed port into your Wi-Fi router or mesh gateway pods. The technician configures the default SSID, checks cellular failovers if applicable, and updates the provider's active database nodes.
Using specialized light-meter equipment, the technician measures the signal attenuation in decibels to ensure maximum fiber speed parameter delivery. Once verified, you are officially active!

How fiber reaches your building depends entirely on how your neighborhood’s electrical lines are structured.
If your power and phone lines hang from wooden utility poles, the fiber drop wire will be hung from the nearest terminal pole. The cable runs through the air to your eaves or a soffit bracket and is secured tightly to avoid sway in high wind currents.
If your community features buried utilities, fiber cables are routed inside microtrenches beneath sidewalks or yards. Technicians often run a temporary orange flexible conduit pipe across your grass, and a landscaping subcontractor trenches it 6-12 inches deep within 14 days of the technician visit.

- Landlord Authorization: If you rent, secure written property manager consent for physical wall drilling.
- Clear Wall Spaces: Identify the target wall near an electrical plug where you want the interior ONT mounted and move any furniture out of the way.

- Contain Pets: Keep cats and dogs inside a separate room since technicians must drill exterior entries and prop doors open.
- Adult Sign-off: An adult over the age of 18 must be physically present for the entire duration to approve drilling locations.
